Fat Cells: Why Re-Gaining Weight Can Be So Easy

Fat Shack

Good news, bad news. Fat cells can be shrunk, but they rarely disappear. Once fat cells form, they might shrink during weight loss, but they do not disappear, a fact that has derailed many weigh.

Young mice fed a high-fat diet fail to produce fat cells within a day of starting a high-fat diet. “In studying what happens before these animals become obese, we found that this fat-producing response occurs unbelievably quickly,” said Matthew Rodeheffer, assistant professor of comparative medicine.

Weight gained is caused by the creation and expansion of white fat cells, or adipose tissue. Eating healthy and exercising can shrink fat cells but not eliminate them, which is why people can gain weight back so quickly.

So the next time you have a snow day and consider going on a 36-hr pizza and ice cream binge, definitely think twice. The body creates fat cells very fast and losing (or shrinking?) them can be a much more prolonged process.

VarCity Fitness Trends: Boxing

Boxing

Boxing used to be a grungy sport reserved for people who didn’t mind working out in a dark, damp cave. Then along came boutique boxing studios, and suddenly boxing’s sexy again. It’s now the sport of models and fitfluencers everywhere—and when it comes to a workout that incorporates cardio and toning, boxing is going to make a strong push to supplant spinning as the number #1 workout in 2019.

For starters, slamming away at a heavy bag is a full-body workout that can burn around 700 calories an hour (depending on your weight). But if that’s not enough to get your gloves on, people are also using the workout as an outlet for stress and to build self-confidence. Go ahead—let it all out!

What Time Is the Royal Wedding!?

Meghan and her mom leaving yoga.

Meghan and her mom leaving yoga.

With just one day left until Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding, the big question isn’t “when is the royal wedding?” but what workouts is the bride-to-be doing to prepare for her royal internationally-televised wedding.  #nopressure

While Meghan was last seen leaving a gym in London last month, the 36-year-old has likely been sticking to one of her favorite workouts:  a pilates workout, which utilizes the Megaformer machine.

“Pilates Platinum is hands down the best thing you could do for your body,” Meghan told Women’s Health U.K. in 2017, referencing the fitness studio in Santa Monica where she used to take classes. “The results are incredible.  Your body changes immediately.  Give it two classes and you will see a difference.”

Pilates is a high-intensity, low impact class, which prioritizes constant, but slow movement, to really help you feel the burn.  During the classes, which can include 30 straight minutes of sliding split squats, participants typically burn 800 to 1,000 calories — and the calorie burn continues for several more hours.

The reason why — it’s so slow, and you’re using every single muscle.  While your slow-twitch muscle fibers repair, your body is using energy, calories and stored sugar so you honestly become a fat-burning machine.

One of the Pilates studios where the former Suits star has been sighted going for her Megaformer fix is Studio Lagree, which has locations in her old and new hometowns of Toronto and London.

Meghan is also friends with Pilates Platinum instructor Heather Dorak, who has documented her friend’s flexibility on social media.

“Happy Happy Birthday to @meghanmarkle 💞. Thank you @pilatesplatinum for bringing this beautiful soul in to my life 10yrs ago. Can’t wait to celebrate with you 👙🌴,” the fitness expert wrote alongside a photo of the pair working their cores by the pool.

The former Suits star has also frequently been photographed out and about with her yoga mat.

Additionally, her mother Doria Ragland (pictured above), who arrived in London ahead of her daughter’s nuptials on Wednesday, works as a yoga therapist.

Oh and if you’re still wondering “what time is the royal wedding?” — the big event starts at 7am NYT.

Working Out Like Justin Bieber: Part 4 of 4

Justin Bieber Workout

To close out our series on Justin Bieber’s workout routine, let’s look at what all three of the experts who examined Justin Bieber’s workouts had in common.  All of our experts recommended to:

•  Do three or four workouts a week, with a balance of upper- and lower-body exercises.  Fewer workouts allow for higher intensity and more recovery.

•  Begin each session with heavy, structural lifts: squats, deadlifts, presses, rows, chinups, or pullups.

•  use the second half of the workout to include single-joint exercises that work smaller muscles (e.g. biceps curls, triceps extensions, lateral raises).

•  Employ a variety of rep ranges to allow a mix of heavy, moderate and light weights.

And whether you’re just starting out on your first gym routine or you’ve been working out for years, if you’re a young lifter the big message is this:

If the goal is to gain mass, you probably won’t get there by training like a bodybuilder.  Not at first.  The closer you are to the starting line, and the farther you are from a bodybuilder’s physique, the more important it is to build a base of strength. You want to get a little stronger each week in the aforementioned squats, deadlifts, presses, and rows.

If your body is closer to your genetic limits, you have to be willing to piss yourself off from time to time.  Remember the words of wisdom from Bryan Krahn, “I still do the classic personal-trainer voodoo trick of making people do the opposite of what they’ve been doing, at least for a while.  Someone who’s really into low-rep training might get a good bump from bodybuilding stuff, and vice versa.”

And as for Bieber’s program, unless you’re a fairly advanced bodybuilder, it’s probably best to leave it to Bieber.

A PhD's Take on Bieber's Fitness Routine: Justin Bieber Fitness Series Part 3

Justin Bieber

When Men’s Fitness approached Brad Schoenfeld, Ph.D. about the Justin Bieber exercise routine, his first reaction was “sounds to me like Justin Bieber would benefit from developing an overall structural foundation at this point.”  Brad is a prolific exercise researcher, an assistant professor at Lehman College in New York, a natural bodybuilding champion, and author, most recently, of The MAX Muscle Plan.

“Ultimately you’d want to work through a spectrum of rep ranges, adding some low- and high-rep work to the mix,” he says.  Low-weight/high-repetition exercises add to muscular endurance and can get the heart rate up to burn calories during weight training.

Brad also wants to see an overreaching phase—a period where you deliberately push your body as hard as you can—followed by a short deloading phase. That guarantees full recovery along with a mental break from the stress of all-out training.  And because we all know that being a teen can be stressful enough, we at VarCity highly recommend taking break from any all-out training that you incorporate into your routine!

Tom Brady: How the Greatest Eats to Stay Great

Tom Brady Diet

Even though Tom Brady’s teen years are far behind him, VarCity is always looking to get health and fitness ideas from people out there doing it best.  And with 5 Super Bowl wins, 4 Super Bowl MVP awards, 12 Pro Bowl appearances and more division titles than any quarterback in NFL history (14), Tom Brady definitely qualifies.  Tom Brady's personal chef Allen Campbell recently sat down with Boston.com and let us know the quarterback's top food preferences.  Below are the interview highlights and please note that VarCity hasn’t verified any of the dietary claims made by Tom Brady’s personal chef.  Also, if you want to read the entire unedited interview click here.

1. You mentioned that your philosophy was a great match with what they were looking for in a chef. How would you describe your philosophy as a chef?

Campbell:  My philosophy is that a plant-based diet has the power to reverse and prevent disease.

2. How does that philosophy translate in terms of what you cook for Tom, Gisele, and the kids?

Campbell: So, 80 percent of what they eat is vegetables. [I buy] the freshest vegetables. If it’s not organic, I don’t use it. And whole grains: brown rice, quinoa, millet, beans. The other 20 percent is lean meats: grass-fed organic steak, duck every now and then, and chicken. As for fish, I mostly cook wild salmon.

3. What ingredients don’t you use?

Campbell: No white sugar.  No white flour. No MSG.  I only cook with coconut oil.  Fats like canola oil turn into trans fats...I use Himalayan pink salt as the sodium.  I never use iodized salt.

4.  What else?

No coffee.  No caffeine.  No fungus.  No dairy.  The kids eat fruit.  Tom, not so much. He will eat bananas in a smoothie. But otherwise, he prefers not to eat fruits.

5. What are some recent meals you’ve cooked for the family?

Campbell: I’m all about serving meals in bowls.  I’ve just did this quinoa dish with wilted greens. I use kale or Swiss chard or beet greens.  I add garlic, toasted in coconut oil.  And then some toasted almonds, or this cashew sauce with lime curry, lemongrass, and a little bit of ginger.  That’s just comfort food for them.

6. How different are Tom’s meals before games compared to what he normally eats?

Campbell: It’s really not different.  The only real difference [in terms of the kinds of things I cook] is seasonal.  In the wintertime, it’s going to be more red meat and more soups and root vegetables.  And in the summer, they eat lighter, so I’ll make raw lasagna and more salads.

If you’ve ever wondered how Ariana Grande maintains her incredibly fit look, well now we know.  Ariana Grande’s personal trainer, Harley Pasternak, just gave us an inside peak into the pop star’s ultimate workout secrets.  And guess what?  Ariana Grande’s routine is totally doable!

Harley lists Ariana’s top 3 workout moves, before adding that he likes to give Ariana ‘one exercise a day each day’ and suggesting fans should do ‘five sets of 30 reps’ of each exercise.

1. Reverse Lunge

Stand with feet shoulder-width apart. Step one foot back and drop knee down, before returning to the original position. Repeat by alternating each leg.

2. Pike Plank

Drop down into the plank position and look down at your shoes. As you do so, lift your hips and contract your abs. Then fall back down to a flat position.

3. Superman

Lie face down with your arms and legs extended. Lift your thighs and chest off the ground before going back down. Repeat this up and down movement.

Vegan Diet

And along with a whole lot of planking and lunges, Ariana also sticks to a strict vegan diet.  ‘I have been a vegan for the last few years and it has been a great experience for me’, Ariana previously told Mail Online.

‘Ariana Grande, she’s vegan, and she loves daikon, lotus, adzuki beans – almost like a macrobiotic Japanese diet,’ Harley says. Oh, and she snacks on TONNES of blueberries.

And along with her vegan diet, Ariana says: ‘I try and live a healthy lifestyle; eating right, exercise and sleep are all so important. I try and stay really active all the time. I like to hike when I can and being on stage is a great workout.’

So make sure we get lots of rest and stock up on blueberries!?  We got this!
